Waahine
Brought to you by Just Imagine
An Exhibition of Portrait
Paintings by Adrienne Dietrich
The Maori Woman (Waahine) is one
of the most interesting of subjects for an artist to paint or draw. She has a
stature, a presence that is both regal and proud. Her face is full of vitality and emotion, beauty and strength.
Having lived in the Waikato
region of New Zealand for almost two years, I have been privileged to meet and
befriend a number of truly wonderful Waahine. Their personalities differed greatly and this is what I wanted
to portray in the paintings - the many and varied personality types: the shy,
the strong, the proud, the maternal, the boisterous, the fun-loving etc.
My search is far from over and I
hope to continue to find and paint many more Waahine, depicting them in a
modern setting as proud women of today.
Adrienne began painting in 1982
and by 1990 was winning major prizes all along the eastern states of
Australia. In 1991 she was awarded Master Pastellist status by the Pastellist
Society of Australia and in the same year won the Best Pastel Painting Award at the Camberwell Rotary Art Show – Australia’s top traditional Art Exhibition.
Adrienne’s painting style is Realist – Impressionist, and her subject matter is varied, but her favourite subject is People: people at leisure, in cafés, at the beach, parents with children, people at work.
She uses a variety of paint media, her favourites being watercolours, gouache, pastels and pen & wash.
Adrienne is a much sought-after tutor in Queensland and NSW. She now resides permanently in New Zealand and is available to conduct workshops in both the North and South Islands.

Ko Tawa
Brought to you by Whangarei Museum
Ko Tawa is a special
exhibition from Auckland Museum which celebrates the taonga passed into
Captain Gilbert Mair's keeping and today is integral to Auckland Museum
Maori Collection. A selection of 28 taonga are exhibited from Mair's
collection of over 230 taonga, including two taonga from Ngapuhi. Each has
a unique story to tell, linking today's descendents to ancestral
landscapes as remembered, treasured and then presented by their nineteenth
century elders. The exhibition opened for Matariki celebrations in
Auckland in 2005 and Whangarei will be the 3rd city to host this
exhibition. As Gilbert Mair's birth town Whangarei has a special link to
the Mair story, with his father Gilbert Mair senior being one of the first
Europeans to settle in Whangarei. A series of lectures will be held in
July.

Te Hue - Artefact
and Artwork
Brought to you by Whangarei
Art Museum
An exhibition that explores
the interaction of the gourd and the NZ people and in particular the NZ
artist, both Maori and others. It is a history that starts its journey
with the arrival of the Maori in NZ and continues through to the gourds (te
hue) influences and uses today on artwork in Aotearoa. It is a journey
that threads its way through the art history of NZ in an unobtrusive and
unspectacular but none the less distinctive way, rather like the creeping
vine produces. Within this history is an element of cross fertilisation
where the gourd becomes a vehicle to the exploration and experimentation
of pattern making by Theo Schoon, and in turn, Schoon's avid interest and
passion for the artistic worth of traditional Maori design helped allow
Gordon Walters to courageously develop his Koru paintings against the
advice of some of his peers. Today the soft curvaceous form of the gourd
and its place in our history both pre and post colonialism, still informs the output
of many artists working today. It can be especially seen in the ceramic artworks of contemporary potters, though certainly not limited to ceramic artworks as we have seen painters and sculptors exploring or referencing Te Hue in their work.
