POU TAHARUA : The Flagstaff Exhibition

HISTORIC FLAGSTAFF PIECES ON DISPLAY Nearly 165 years after the last of four flagpoles erected on Maiki Hill, Kororareka was felled by Ngapuhi Rangatira Hone Heke and his warriors, remaining pieces of these pou come together in Pou Taharua.

Waipu Community Carols are said to be the most enthusiastic in Northland.
24th Dec  Waipu Christmas Parade
7pm Christmas Eve. The Waipu Christmas Parade is one of the few that actually happens on Christmas Eve. The town is a buzz, as many locals come home for Christmas and holiday makers come to town.
25th Dec Christmas Day Lunch

A Christmas Day menu with traditional favourites, 11.30am until 2.30pm on December 25th, BYO, plated entree followed by buffet meal and desserts. 31 December FREE New Years Eve Jazz & Blues Festival, Concert on the Canal
Marsden Cove, One Tree Point, Whangarei Harbour

Marsden Cove is putting on a free New Years Eve concert in the marina with a great fireworks display. Live bands including renowned Soul/Blues guitarist Billy TK Junior will be performing on a floating stage. It will be the perfect place to safely moor and enjoy the music and celebrate New Years Eve. The licensed Waterline bar and cafe will be open late along with the off licence store. Starting 5pm until midnight

The Paihia Summer Festival, running throughout the 10 days will be various different FREE events for visiting and local families to get involved in. 5th January Summer Festival Ruakaka Races

7th January The Drifters

16th January Northland Buskers Festival
Whangarei Town Basin Dent Street

From 12.00 until 5.00pm the Town Basin waterfront will be alive with stage entertainment and many roving performers. A fun family day out including buskers, clowns, stilt walkers, face painting, balloon sculpting and static performers. From 5.00pm until dusk with music, circus and comic acts with a grand finale light and fire show. This will be a memorable family Festival providing a forum for performers to showcase their talents.

19-22nd January Bay of Islands Sailing Week

Tuesday 19 January 2010 is Registration Day, followed by three days of Racing. 2010 is the 8th Year for the Bay of Islands Sailing Week, where racing boats from all over the North Island compete in a selection of divisions.

Bay of Islands Arts Festival
Various location in the Bay of Islands
Presenting Fourteen Fabulous acts, eleven New Zealand and four international at the 2010 Bay of Islands Arts Festival Including Nimby Opera, performing The Cunning Little Vixen, Kiwi band Elemeno P, Te Radar and the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra followed by the Le Baraillec Trio from Paris, then Chile, South Africa and Argentina. Plus much more! Also Street Carnival on Saturday 13 February with local and national performers. Variety Concert on Saturday 13 February, involving a range of local artists in music and dance. Music in the Domain to celebrate Valentines Day Sunday February 14. Workshops attached to shows, a touring programme, Impromptu Acts, Visual Arts activities and displays will flow through the Festival Month.

30th - 31st January Ngapuhi Festival 2010
Kaikohe Stadium
Performances will include Local Kapa Haka groups as well as an exciting line up of nationally and internationally recognised and extremely talented Maori performers. The talent line up includes Anika Moa and her soulful sound while the hit new reggae sensation Sweet & Irie who have become familiar faces at the top of the New Zealand charts with their hit singles My Gurl and Sweet & Irie are sure to get the crowd moving. 1814 have made a name for themselves in New Zealand and overseas and this talented home-grown, 8 piece roots reggae combination will also take to the stage. Ruia Aperehama, Big Belly Women, Herbs, Souljah, Akareta and the Boys are just some of the amazing talent who have signed up to perform and support this auspicious event. To top it all off a well known widely loved hot group that is taking the world by storm will close off the festival with a memorable performance and to add a bit of excitement they chosen to remain a mystery until the festival hits town.

This event will feature a wide range of Northlands musical and performance talents. Bring your own seating, sit in the unique setting of a concert at a functioning railway yard, and enjoy some of the great talent Northland has to offer.

4th - 6th February Waitangi Day Festival
A fun, 3 day Family festival leading into Waitangi day. Sports and entertainment events designed for the entire family, from kiddie Olympics to team events and leading music acts and concerts. At the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and its surrounds.

6th February Waitangi Day Festival
At 5.30am the nation's birthday begins in prayerful mood at the Whare Runanga. A lone piper will greet the dawn at the country's largest Naval flagstaff to begin a day of sports, ceremony and community family fun. Entertainers will celebrate the diversity of New Zealand through the performing arts throughout the grounds and on the Hobson's Beach/Maikuku stage. At noon a 21-gun salute and the Band of the Royal New Zealand Navy will fill the clifftop Treaty Grounds with traditional ceremony. The Beat Retreat ceremony will formally close the day at the flagstaff at 5pm, then at 7:30pm a free concert will gather crowds again to the stage at Hobson's Beach.

NZAEE Seaweek is an annual national celebration of the sea, with events and activities held throughout NZ. Northland activities will be held around the reigon, throughout the week, with details listed on the Seaweek website www.seaweek.org.nz. There is a focus on fishing this year with the theme Fish for the Future! Competitions, involvement, learning and lots of fun.

Steam Train Rides, Kawakawa
Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Go on a 30 minute round trip on a vintage steam train. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm.
The train runs from the Station to the other end of town over the first two bridges and back again. This is a little over 3Km and each journey is about a thirty minute round trip. Fares are $8 Adults & $3 Children.

Hikurangi Country Market

The Hikurangi Country Market is a community event held on the 2nd Saturday of every month except October and December. The October market is held at Labour Weekend and the December market is held in conjunction with the Hikurangi Christmas Parade on the first Saturday of December. Stallholders sell everything from plants, bric a brac, arts, crafts and the like. We would like the market to grow and are always interested in new stalls. Stall fees are $8.00
